The CD player in my car recently decided to crap out on me. Funny how it just happen to be working one day and then, pfft the next. So I've been "forced" to listen to the radio. IMO, Detroit radio sucks, really, especially if you're looking for indie, alternative, lo-fi, etc. But...there's one bright side to it. That being a radio station that airs from Windsor, Ontario, CIDR 93.9 FM aka The River.
They play a pretty good mix of songs that I can a) tolerate or b) really like, and then there's always c) get the scoop on some Canadian artists that aren't getting much/any attention on this side of the Detroit River. Like tonight when I was driving back home from school, feeling a huge load of my shoulders with one test down and only one more to go, I was cruising along to Arcade Fire's "Rebellion (Lies)" and Violent Femmes "Add It Up." Trust me, I've looked and there isn't a single other station in the area that plays songs like that, or even artists like that. Granted, though, they're no different than any other station and they do have a tendency to play the same songs, but not to the point of wanting to put your fist through the dashboard. And at least of few of those songs are starting to grow on me.Being Here by The Stills [deleted mp3]
Come On Get Higher by Matt Nathanson [deleted mp3]
Shattered (Turn The Car Around) by O.A.R. [deleted mp3]
Makes driving on snow-covered roads with crazy tailgaters a little more pleasant, eh

I just moved to michigan from Toronto, and I know exactly what you mean about detroit radio being unbearble, and repetitive...and there is no variety, like indie radio or etc. But 93.9 river is better than the other stations here
