Enemy Mine

Swan Lake's second album, Enemy Mine, was released yesterday. So far, it's good. Not great, but still good. I guess I'm one of those that prefer Wolf Parade itself over any of their side projects.

Lemonwilde from Los Angeles have just finished their first EP, Red Room. You can download it for free from MySpace. Band member, Luke Martinez, says that "we’ve grouped together to take music to places that it hasn’t been before..." I'd say that's a tall order to fill, but they're definitely off to a good start.

The White Noise Supremacists are a DIY band fronted Iféoluwa Babalola from Brooklyn, New York. The first EP, Shadows, was released in 2006 and are currently doing shows around the NYC area (and seeking a bassist, as well). The 6-song EP is a great listen, starting off strong with the first track and continuing all the way through.

The Hazards of Love

In case you were too busy slurping down the green beer and/or Guinness yesterday, a pre-release download of The Decemberists' new album is available on iTunes.
I haven't had a chance to give it a proper listen all the way through, but so far, I'm definitely liking it. And I'm very much looking forward to seeing them live in May.

Like a bad dream...I are back

I haven't exactly been MIA, just on spring break in St. Louis.
While squished in a middle seat on the plane there and back, I had the iPod out, but chose to watch movies instead of listening to music after reading a few lines in a magazine that reminded me of a movie I really want to see but hasn't been released in the US yet, Der Baader Meinhof Komplex.
It was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars this year, not that that qualifies it to be a good movie. As I'm sure we all know, award ceremonies don't exactly pick the real winners.
The film goes something like this:
Germany in the 1970s: Murderous bomb attacks, the threat of terrorism and the fear of the enemy inside are rocking the very foundations of the yet fragile German democracy. The radicalised children of the Nazi generation lead by Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof and Gudrun Ensslin are fighting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment, many of whom have a Nazi past. Their aim is to create a more human society but by employing inhuman means they not only spread terror and bloodshed, they also lose their own humanity. The man who understands them is also their hunter: the head of the German police force Horst Herold. And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists, he knows he's only dealing with the tip of the iceberg.

Martina Gedeck also appeared in the 2006 Oscar-winner, The Lives of Others, one of my all-time favorite films. Another German fave of mine is 2004's Good Bye, Lenin!
