The warmth is coming
Supposed to be in the low 80's this weekend! Finally.
And with that another semester is coming to an end for me. One more exam to take and one more paper to write. Lucky for me, the topic is a good one.
So this will be how I'm spending my next couple nights - writing about why I love this thing we call indie.
And with that, there were some notable releases this past week.
Depeche Mode released their 12th studio album. While Sounds of the Universe certainly doesn't have the nostalgia of the classic that is Violator, I'd give a solid 3.5

In Chains by Depeche Mode from Sounds of the Universe [deleted mp3]
I wanted to love this EP. I really did. But the latest release from The Breeders, Fate To Fatal, just didn't quite cut it for me. Of the 4 songs, the title track was the strongest, and more of what I was hoping for.

Fate to Fatal by The Breeders from Fate To Fatal EP [deleted mp3]
With Okkervil River's lastest EP, I would have to say it's for the truly devoted fans. The title track is already on The Stand Ins and features a new track as well as the "one man band" version of "Pop Lie".

Pop Lie (album version) by Okkervil River from Pop Lie EP [deleted mp3]
I thoroughly enjoyed My Maudlin Career, the newest release from Scottish indie pop band, Camera Obscura. A good 4.5 in my book.

French Navy by Camera Obscura from My Maudlin Career [deleted mp3]
It's no secret I'm a huge Manchester Orchestra fan. I had such high hopes for Mean Everything to Nothing after the track "I've Got Friends" was released. Andy Hull's voice is like gold, IMO. As I sit here, writing this and listening to the album again, I'm asking myself, "What's missing?" There are definitely some strong tracks on this album, but it's just not grabbing me as a whole album like I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child did. Then again, maybe my hopes were a bit too high. As of now, I give it a 4 out of 5.

Books: A Pint of Plain
When things go wrong and will not come right,
Though you do the best you can,
When life looks black as the hour of night -
A pint of plain is your only man.
When money's tight and hard to get
And your horse has also ran,
When all you have is a heap of debt -
A pint of plain is your only man.
When health is bad and your heart feels strange,
And your face is pale and wan,
When doctors say you need a change,
A pint of plain is your only man.
When food is scarce and your larder bare
And no rashers grease your pan,
When hunger grows as your meals are rare -
A pint of plain is your only man.
In time of trouble and lousey strife,
You have still got a darlint plan
You still can turn to a brighter life -
A pint of plain is your only man.
by Flann O'Brien (Brian O'Nolan)
I initially bought this for my love of Guinness. And I do mean love. Of the 2 or 3 times a year I'll have a drink, more often than not it's a pint or two of the good stuff. It was an interesting read and a good beginner's look into a "blow-in's" pub travels, and just one of many books about the perfect pint. What can I say? Guinness lovers are passionate about their pints, the world over.

The Open Door EP
I've never considered myself a die-hard Death Cab for Cutie fan. I say this having all of their officially released songs as well as a few unofficial tracks found along the way. So I ignored the bad reviews of Narrow Stairs last year and downloaded the album without even listening to the samples or streaming it. It was...okay. Some tracks I really liked, some I could've saved my money and done without.I gave them another shot this past Tuesday when The Open Door EP was released even though, again, I'd read some not-so-raving reviews.
And I think this is why...
It's not the same DCFC that blew me away the first time I really listened to them. So after giving it a good listen to, I found myself going back to the beginning; back to that signature Death Cab sound.
Now, I know we don't want the same bands to keep coming out with repetitive sounding albums, but there was a good formula there. If it ain't broke then don't fix it.

Fire and Ice
image from yours truly taken Sept. 2008 at Geysir, IcelandSeeing as how the name of this here blog is in Icelandic, I thought it only fair that I do have at least one post dedicated to music coming out of Iceland, that is other than Sigur Rós, Múm or Björk. So without further ado...

Stafrænn Hákon has been putting out some great electro-ambient music since 1999.Svefn by Stafrænn Hákon from Gummi [deleted mp3]

Stand out title tracks
Finally got my first listen this morning on the way to work. I love it!Stand out tracks: "Kingdom of Rust" and "Winter Hill"
Stand out tracks: "When I Died" and "Now We Can See"
I read about this band from Minneapolis yesterday called Halloween, Alaska while reading MFR. I was able to listen to some of the tracks streaming on the band's MySpace page, but was unable to find a download version of the album. That is, till about 10 minutes ago. Someone at iTunes maybe had too many cocktails at lunch? You can find it here under the name Alaska & Halloween (?). I can say that the title track is really good. Just a tad of DCFC feel to it.I have two movies here patiently waiting for me that I've been really wanting to watch, so enjoy the great weather while it's still here.
I'll have plenty of some more good new music and artists for ya'll in the next couple days. You can take a sneak peek here for one of them.

Impatiently waiting
Snow coming and it's April. There's something very wrong with that.
The part of my weekend that wasn't spent working overtime and on a paper that I still haven't finished (ugh) was done on my arse searching the internets for some really great new tunes. Okay, so maybe it wasn't a wholehearted search, but a search nonetheless through eMusic, Amazon, Last.fm, and iTunes hoping they'd find me a winner. (I've yet to find a decent indie music store in the Detroit metro area)
Is it just me or does the market seem to be getting flooded with off-shoots of Fleet Foxes and folkish types? Personally, I need some good rockin' tunes. That's not to say that folk is bad, but really, an over-saturated market of folk just isn't my cup of tea. More times than not, I need that pick-me-up vibe, especially when I'm dragging and exhausted. Then again, being in the state I'm in probably isn't the best time to be searching, now is it?
So I'm waiting. Waiting for Manchester Orchestra, Doves, and Sunset Rubdown to name a few. And waiting for this grogginess and crappy weather to pass.
I Was a Lid by Manchester Orchestra from Let My Pride Be What's Left Behind EP [deleted mp3]
There Goes the Fear by Doves from The Last Broadcast [deleted mp3]
The Taming of the Hand That Came Back To Life by Sunset Rubdown from Random Spirit Lover [deleted mp3]
